Fungsi

Past perfect tense digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa sesuatu kegiatan terjadi sebelum kegiatan lain terjadi. Past perfect sering dipasangkan dengan simple past tense.

Kalimat Positif (statement)

Rumus: Subject + had + verb 3

Contoh kalimat:

  • He had gone out when the phone rang.

(Dia sudah pergi ketika telepon berdering.)

  • The taxi had arrived before they arrived at the airport.

(Taksi sudah tiba sebelum mereka sampai di bandara.)

  • He had eaten before they left for Jakarta.

(Dia sudah makan sebelum mereka pergi ke Jakarta.)

Kalimat Negatif

Rumus: Subject + had + not + verb 3

Contoh kalimat:

  • He had not come home when his package arrived.

(He belum pulung ketika paketnya tiba.)

  • The taxi had not arrived when they arrived at the airport.

(Taksi belum sampai ketika mereka sudah sampai bandara.)

  • He had not eaten when they left for Jakarta.

(Dia belum makan ketika pergi ke Jakarta.)

Kalimat Tanya

Rumus: Had + Subject + verb 3?

  • Had he come home when his package arrived?

(Apakah dia sudah pulang ketika paketnya tiba?)

  • Had the taxi arrived when the family arrived at the airport?

(Apakah taksi sudah sampai ketika mereka tiba di bandara?)

Suatu aktifitas atau kejadian terjadi sebelum kejadian lainnya di waktu lampau.

Dua kejadian terjadi secara bersamaan di waktu lampau.

I had finished the project before the teacher collected it.

I was finishing the project when the teacher collected it.

(Aku sudah selesai projeknya ketika guru mengumpulkannya.)

(Aku sedang proses menyelesaikan projek ketika guru mengumpulkannya.)
